WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

This is a classic Honduran coffee that’s nutty and chocolatey with a smooth body. With the medium roasts, you may pick up on a touch of bright stone fruit on top of milk chocolate flavors, while in the dark roasts, you’ll get bolder and richer dark chocolate flavors. Whether you go medium or dark, this one’s meant to be an easy-drinker.

ORIGIN STORY

The roast is part of our Matriarch Series, and these particular beans come from 77 female producers of the smallholder co-op COOPERATIVA RAOS. Female farmers in Honduras play a critical role in coffee production, but they often face gender-based discrimination when it comes to obtaining financial credit and land ownership rights. Cooperativa RAOS aims to increase gender equity within its group by improving access to educational programs for all of its members and paying premiums to its female producers.

Cooperativa RAOS (Regional de Agricultores Orgánicos de la Sierra) believes "Gender equity means that women and men have the right to equal and fair access to the use, control, and benefits from the same goods and services of society, as well as to decision-making in the areas of social, economic, and social life, as well as politics." The organization supports this philosophy by developing training farms and organic-farming support programs, and specifically making these programs available to all of its members, including (especially) its female growers.

MORE ABOUT THE MATRIARCH SERIES

Our Matriarch Series exclusively highlights coffee from female producers worldwide. Women play a major role in coffee production, often performing the hardest and most critical manual labor, while juggling their responsibilities of managing the household. These superwomen not only rarely get the spotlight, they also lack the same access to capital and resources as their male counterparts. Our intent with this series is to not only celebrate the amazing women in the coffee supply chain, but also to ensure they are paid a premium for their hard work and to work directly with organizations that have committed to improving equity for women in the coffee value chain wherever possible.
